The ghost of General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne.
If you're traveling in Pennsylvania after midnight be on the lookout for the ghost of General 'Mad' Anthony Wayne.
Anthony Wayne was born on New Year's day in 1745 in Chester County, PA, about 20 miles from Philadelphia. Wayne served in the Revolutionary War and during the conquest of the Northwest Territory. Returning from battle in Michigan, Wayne grew ill from gout and died in Erie PA on December 15, 1796. He was buried beneath the blockhouse in Erie which now bears his name. In 1809, Wayne's son Isaac disinterred his remains for reburial in the family plot at St David's Cemetery in Chester County. Erie residents wanted to keep Wayne's remains at the blockhouse grave. Unknown to Isaac Wayne, Dr James Wallace boiled Wayne's body in a cauldron and separated the flesh from the bones. Wayne's flesh and clothing were reburied at the blockhouse. The bones were given to Isaac who transported them by wagon to Chester County. According to legend, as the wagon traveled east, some of Wayne's bones fell out along the road Route 322. Every New Years' morning, General Wayne's ghost, in search of his scattered bones, rises from his grave at St David's and rides to Erie and back to St David's.
